Feature: Aerospace engineering and its future in Bangladesh

We often hear a person of average or limited intelligence is sarcastically described as, ''no rocket scientist.'' The joke has been around for decades since the America public first became acquainted with NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in 1958. The newly formed government organization was a clear response to the Cold War, and when the USSR launched the first satellite (Sputnik) later that year, the space race began in earnest.

Aerospace Engineering is a very exciting field. Aerospace Engineering offers a number of benefits. Aerospace Engineering Benefits include,
• You can design and work on Airplanes, Fighter jets, Space shuttle, rockets, space launch vehicles, race cars, Jet engines, helicopters, space stations, and lunar probes, interplanetary probes, rovers, Landers and many more.
• You would have the personal enjoyment and satisfaction to see something that you built fly in front of you.
• Since, Aerospace Engineering is a specialized field so aerospace engineers are often paid better than other fields like Mechanical Engineering.

Altering Testimony on DU Violence: Moeen's allegation refuted

The parliamentary sub-committee probing the August 2007 violence at Dhaka University has refuted former army chief Moeen U Ahmed's allegation of altering his testimony on the event.

Moeen, a key player in the last caretaker government, in an e-mail to Rashed Khan Menon, chief of the probe body, last week said he in his testimony to the committee did not blame the then caretaker government for the violence on the university campus. He also termed “inappropriate” the news reports done on the basis of the committee chief's press briefing.

“News items published in newspapers quoted me that I had blamed the last caretaker government for the campus violence. It is not correct. The fact is I did not tell the probe body anything blaming the then caretaker government,” a source in the committee quoted from the e-mail. Menon on Saturday said, “We are not worried about his [Moeen] claim. We had recorded his testimony on the incident.” He said, “A small part of his [Moeen] testimony got blurred for technical glitch. But that does not create any difficulty in understanding what he said during the teleconference.”

69.5 top marks in medical entry test

Results for the first combined medical and dental admission test have been announced, a Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) official says.

The results were published on Sunday, two days after the test was held amid tension and strict invigilation, said medical information service director Abul Kalam Azad. The results are available at http://www.dghs.gov.bd/InputRoll.php

According to DGHS, candidate Mohammad Sharafat Karim, roll number 110186, secured first position in the merit list. He obtained highest 69.5 marks, lowest top score at least in the last five years, in the 100-mark one-hour examination consisting of multiple-choice questions Tension ran high as intelligence sleuths arrested 21 people including medical students, a teacher of Jahangirnagar University and a doctor of Dhaka Dental College Hospital for selling the question papers of the entry test.

However, much to the relief of the authorities, the papers on sale turned out to be fake ones. Some 51,236 candidates vied for 2,760 seats in the government medical colleges and 280 seats in dental colleges. Besides the private medical colleges have 3,663 seats and dental colleges 765.

This was the first time that the health directorate collected admission forms online. However, the score took many by surprise as students after the examination cheered for 'easy' questions. Rajib Saha, a doctor who taught medical admission seekers for the last five years, told bdnews24.com that the top score was the lowest at least in the last five sessions. "Maybe students were confident in answering easy questions. But their simple mistakes wiped off many numbers due to negative marking," he said. This year 0.25 number was deducted for a wrong answer.

However, medical education department of the DGHS did not issue any media release on the details of admission process. The director, Prof Shah Abdul Latif was also not available for comment. The admission test was deferred by a week from Sep 23 after a staff in the DGHS printing press was caught with a question paper while leaving from his duty on Sep 13. Two other people were arrested in that case that led to printing fresh question papers.

Most pvt varsities flout rules Ban on admission likely for : universities without own campus

Thirty-eight out of 51 private universities, which failed to comply with legal obligations of establishing their own campus by September 30, are likely to be disqualified for fresh student enrolment in next semester, officials said.

“We may not allow those universities fresh student intake from next semester for their failure in complying with the rules within the stipulated timeframe,” Atful Hye Shibly, a member of the University Grants Commission dealing with the private universities, told daily sun Sunday.

Earlier, the university regulatory body had fixed September 30 as deadline for the private universities to have their own campus on certain land as per the Private Universities Act passed by the current Awami League-led coalition government in 2010.

The law was updated following allegations that the private universities were running business with no proper infrastructure, laboratories or amenities for students and teachers. Many of them are still called “caged campus”. Asked for comment about the legal measures for non-compliance of universities, the UGC chairman, AK Azad Chowdhury, also a former vice chancellor of Dhaka University, said that he would figure out actions against them in consultation with Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid. “Those who would comply with the law will be rewarded, and those who would fail will be punished,” he said adding that the decision will come from the government, which does not want to shut any university.

Those who paid no heed to the UGC deadline have to face the punishment as per the law, but those who made a little progress may be given reasonable time to fulfil the requirements, he said. “They must go by the rules and norms,” he added. As per the rule, the private universities have to establish their own campuses on at least one acre of land within five years of getting the provisional certificate of initiation. Only 11 of the universities have fulfilled their requirements while the rest are lagging behind.

North South University, University of Science and Technology Chittagong, International Islami University Chittagong, Ahsanullah Science and Technology University, International University of Business and Agriculture and Technology, BGC Trust University Bangladesh, Bangladesh University, University of Business and Technology, Independent University Bangladesh, Stamford University, Premier University and City University have established their own campuses within the deadline. The City University furnished the criteria on September 29, only a day before the deadline. Azad Chowdhury said the UGC wants to remove the anxiety of the students and guardians by giving a decision shortly. Thirty-eight private universities, which had commenced academic activities between five and eighteen years ago, have failed to go by the UGC direction, according to a report prepared by the commission. According to the report, the non-compliant universities are Darul Ihsan University, Prime University, World University of Bangladesh, Victoria University, Presidency University, Prime Asia University, Royal University of Dhaka, and Bangladesh Islami University, Sylhet International University, Atish Dipankar University, The Millennium University, Dhaka International University, Daffodil International University, Northern University, State University Bangladesh, Manarat International University, The Peoples University of Bangladesh, Uttara University, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, Green University of Bangladesh, Metropolitan University, IBAIS University, University of Information Technology and Science, Leading University, University of Development Alternative, Bangladesh University, Southern University of Bangladesh, University of South Asia, United International University, Shanto-Moriyam University of Creative Technology, Asian University of Bangladesh, American International University Bangladesh, Eastern University, The University of Asia Pacific, South East University, Gano University, Brac University and East West University. Two other universities — Asa University and East Delta University — will complete their five years on October 22, 2011. Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid told daily sun that the private universities, which do not have their own campuses, will be allowed only to enroll students for the running semester. “If they try to go for enrollment in the next semester, they will have to seek permission from us,” the minister said.

JnU tuition fees not raised says Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has viewed that high level discussion is needed for necessary amendments to the Jagannath University Act, 2005, towards resolving the student unrest, reports UNB. Narrating the situation that gave rise to the student unrest the Minister told reporters at his office on Sunday that the last BNP government had passed the law that stipulated the university would raise funds to stand on its own feet after five years.

Seven years have gone but the law was not implemented. The government has not issued any directive till now to make the law effective. Rather, the present government has allocated Tk 100 crore in the budget for infrastructure development of the university. The students felt that the tuition and other fees will go up manifold as the government has not provided funds in the budget for current expenditure of the university. But it was not correct.
