BGC Trust Medical College is the translation of a dream of Engineer Afsar Uddin Ahmed, a son of Kanchanagar, Chandanaish,Chittagong, to pioneer the cause of highest quality medical education and establishment of a model hospital for the poor and under privileged rural people. It is the translation of the BGC Trust theme – ” Health & Education, the keys to national prosperity & service to humanity” – with an ambition to establish a medical faculty, BGC Trust applied to the Government of Bangladesh for an University that will have the medical faculty in Feb, 2001.
After being inspected by different committees of the University Grants Commission, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health, the Government gave permission to run a medical college instead of a medical faculty under BGC Trust in June 2002. Message from The Founder
dIt gives me immense pleasure and great joy to make an endorsement on the prospectus of Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical College, Sylhet. This college is the outcome of a long cherished dream of mine.
From very early days of my life I have thought that if I ever get over the hump I will make sure, I give something back. So when I fell into good fortune I wanted to share it with those less fortunate than myself. I decided to utilize my humble contribution for general upliftment of the society. That is why I have either founded or actively supported the establishment of many schools, colleges, Madrasa's and other charitable organizations for the benefit of society.

The improving effect of these on the lives of poor and deprived people provided me the incentive to think to do some thing for teeming millions of the region who were suffering for lack of health care facilities. It became my cherished dream to establish a medical college along with a hospital which will produce a group of medical graduates with best possible professional knowledge and training with high moral character and an attitude of service above self. It will also provide medical care to the suffering people. I have put my time, energy and resources to accomplish this dream.
I am happy now that the college along with its attached 875-bedded hospital has been established with all modern facilities to impart knowledge and training to the students and to provide health care facilities to the needy. The college now possesses a team of highly qualified, experienced and devoted teachers and staff who are putting up their best efforts to produce well qualified and trained medical graduates with high ethical values to serve the suffering humanity. I am confident that the students of the college will take advantage of these opportunities to acquire knowledge, training and moral values with devotion and determination to make themselves the best in the field of medical profession and earn laurels for themselves and the college.
Though it is gratifying that a full-fledged medical college and hospital have been established, the time has not yet come to be contented. We must strive to make it a centre of excellence in education and treatment with facilities for post-graduate training and study. I shall do everything possible to achieve this goal.
No establishment of this dimension can be completed without the help of many individuals. Hence thanks and gratitude are owed to all of them for help in various ways in the completion of this institution.
I wish to acknowledge with enormous gratitude Prof. Md Abdur Rahim Chowdhury, Prof. Syed Luqueman Ali, Prof. Md. Kamruzzaman, Dr. Moinul Karim, Dr. Wazir Ahmed Chowdhury and Mr. Mufazzal Karim for providing help in their areas of expertise. I also wish to offer salute to Mr. Wali Tasaruddin J.P.M BE, Dr. Akram Syed OBE for their selfless contribution and advice in making of this college and hospital.
Finally I acknowledge my wife late Mrs Rabeya Khatun Chowdhury for her contribution in accomplishing this gigantic task. She is no longer with us but I believe, her memory and dedication will encourage us to build this college a unique one.
I am sure if we continue our efforts sincerely this college will make a definite mark on the national health care system. May Allah bless us.
